Utilizing a natural building material was critical to the design concept of Surface to Sukkah. Using a simple framing structure, burlap here acts as reinforcement for the spray applied terracotta, and is left uncoated as it transitions from wall to roof to ensure appropriate levels of enclosure. Burlap is a 100% biodegradable fabric made from natural jute fibers. Similarly, sun-dried terracotta, while durable, erodes over time and through climate cycles eventually returns to the soil it is made from. As the terracotta dissolves, the burlap enclosure remains and opens up to dappled light and permeable views through it.
