01 DESCRIPTION
At the intersection of Franklin Alley and Broadway Street in Troy, NY, history and modernity converge. Troy is a vibrant and evolving city with a unique industrious past and ambitions to reorient towards a technology-centered economic future. Corners symbolize a transition in architecture—they invite movement as light sharply cuts around their edges. Evolving Luminescence acts as an extension of the historic building facade, springing from its corner and stretching into the alleyway. The evocative interplay of cycling colored lights cast on four cantilevered scrims enchants onlookers and illuminates a view to the future.
The fabric scrims, suspended from steel outriggers, pay homage to Troy’s industrial roots in the textile and steel industries. By day, the white sheer fabric panels act like a sign of what is to come. As the sun sets, Evolving Luminescence comes alive with vibrant LED illumination oscillating between a spectrum of colors sampled from the public art and murals of downtown Troy.
As viewers approach and move around the installation, they experience differing framed views through tapered voids cut into the scrims. Each angle offers a new perspective, highlighting the continuous interplay between history and modernity. The radiant dance of RGB lighting merges the old with the new, celebrating the continuity and evolution of an ever-changing narrative that honors the past, embraces the present, and looks toward the future.
