Six years have passed since the 2030 Paris Climate Accord target date to cut carbon emissions. The world has made much progress towards carbon neutrality, however, the effects of climate change are still evident. Sea levels continue to rise in major coastal cities, and while population density had previously been seen as a sustainable solution, the carbon emissions of high-rises built of concrete are no longer tenable. This, coupled with high costs of living and workplace flexibilities revealed during the previous decade’s pandemic, has produced a more mobile populace. Additionally, the 3.2° rise in temperature has encouraged a northern migration away from the equator, especially during the warmer months.

In this new world, the home of 2036 has become more versatile, functional, and mobile than ever before. Domestic tasks have evolved with people both working and recreating from home— all while on the move. The changes in climate have also encouraged an independence and reliance on individuals and their homes, to produce more of the food they rely on. The flexibility of remote work and school has allowed families to rekindle their connection to nature as they choose temporary sites to live throughout the year.
